Mega Man 6 is an NES game that was released in 1994, well after the release of the SNES and not long before the N64. But...how and why? Well, this video sets out to answer that question as well as analyze the game and let you know my thoughts on it, as always.

I had this game as a kid, and ngl, I never beat it because I could never get past Plant Man's level. My child-brain was too stupid to realize how the springs worked and how to jump higher. Happy to say that I was eventually able to beat it on the PS2 Anniversary Collection. I honestly feel like all 6 of the NES MM games have something special about them that makes them fun and unique, and most importantly, still worth playing today. :)

Megaman 5 just didn't do for me, the soundtrack wasn't that interesting, and while I did like the boss designs, the weapons were pretty bland and forgetable. Probably the weaker Megaman from de NES era, but this is just my opinion.

YES! Someone that enjoys Mega Man 6 as much as me! I remember being obsessed with this game as a kid, but none of my friends were interested in playing an NES game at that point. I had a weird selection of Mega Man games growing up (2, 4 & 6... only the even numbers), and MM6 ended up being my most played of the bunch.

My mom brought this home as a gift for me one day, and asked if that was the one I wanted. I had to tell her no because it was for the NES and I had the SNES. She asked if I could still play it, and I mentioned that we did still have the NES but it was all packed up in the box and in the basement because it didn't work that well anymore. So she had to take it back and get Mega Man X instead. But I felt bad about parting with Mega Man 6 since the cover of the box looked cool.

Mega Man 6 is one of my favorite installments in the classic series. I love the diverse levels, and how the presentation gets the most out of the NES's capabilities, both its visuals and its audio. I also like the Rush suits and was always a little disappointed they only ever returned in MM7. The Mr. X facade is pretty ridiculous, but no one's expecting NES Mega Man to win awards for its story anyway. I understand why MM6 is a more forgotten entry in the series, but it was a fantastic way to send off the NES.

80s kid here. Back in the day I didn't know you could aim the metal blade, so I didn't end up using it often. it was kind of a pain for me to switch weapons, so I used to just go through the whole game with the mega buster. I got super good at firing off multiple shots in a single jump, and that satisfying whang whang sound of hits landing was great. Another thing I never realized as a kid: Heat man is literally a zippo lighter

The fact that Nintendo choose to published this game in the west to launch it with the top loading NES was phenomenal, it was also released same year as Zoda's Revenge: Star Tropics 2, Nintendo's other RPG so that gamers had a good selection to choose from. This also isn't the last time Nintendo does this either, in 1996 Nintendo did it again by publishing Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the Super NES despite Capcom not interested in releasing that version worldwide. Street Fighter Alpha 2 was published by Nintendo in the west just in time for the Super NES Jr's launch alongside Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow (another game Nintendo published), Kirby's Dream Land 3, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble.

I think the top loader is more expensive now because it's more reliable than the old VHS player design and collectors want real hardware not just systems on a card however for casual gamers who want a retro fix I recommend you just check out cheap emulation systems that can also play cartridges those allow for hd outputs easily and often remove things like sprite flickering and slowdown

    >The end of Plant Man's stage always ends up draining my lives... Have you tried slowing the fuck down? Maybe don't blindly jump over every pit of water you lay eyes across? You know there are fish inside that might jump out at you, so approach slowly and kill them first. NES games are tile based, so you only need to be wary every 16 pixels of space, and it's not like the game designers *want* you to die, they're just being cheeky about it.

It was the first Megaman I've ever played and one of the first ever games I've played in my life. What I remember about the time was that it was so above everything else that existed back then. This is probably why it is remembered as one of the best games of all time.

the 2 castles format was fine for this game. but by 6, holy shit that game just feels like it wouldn't end fast enough. it just got more tedious each proceeding game. anyways, 4 was my first mega man game, and will always be the favorite of mine. i play this game in my sleep, i've been through it so many times. also for the 1st wily's 2nd form, if you detonate drill bomb right before it ricochets off the machine, it works better than trying to land charge shots, while you drain energy tank supply in the process.

All the bosses being functionally different is a bit of a stretch. Five of them have the exact same slow, floaty jump. You also cannot jump while sliding. Once you slide you are committed to the full length of the slide, which is maddening because the controls in MM5 were perfect.

Megaman is part of the reason I don't really like Mario games when I was young, since the ones I enjoyed was megaman, dkc, ghost n goblins, battletoads, were much more difficult and fun. I think I will never feel accomplished like when I have beaten battletoads in battle maniac when I was 8. Damn I m old.

You can really see how there is just one or two quality levels between the level art of this game and Shovel Knight. MM6 really brought out everything the NES could do, considering how basic and ressource efficient the first NES games had to be. I wonder how much extra hardware they crammed into the cardridge, then.

There's a cool visual trick you might not have noticed: In the intro stage, the area around you goes dark if there are no street lights around. It's only a little touch, yeah, but still it says a lot about the game's level of ambition.

I notice a lot of people saying Mega Man 6 is one of their favorites despite the downgrades in gameplay. I see people mentioning how they like the theming, how colorful the game is, etc. Does that really outweigh the 2 main things I mentioned in another comment (which are the Mega Buster and Slide downgrades) ???? Personally, it could have been my favorite of the 6 if they had kept Mega Man 5's buster and slide, but I wonder if the devs thought it was too OP because that buster really can destroy a lot of stuff.

    • @theotakuguy8957
      @theotakuguy8957 8 годин тому

5's buster is insanely powerful so I think it was the right choice The slide is an issue yeah thankfully there has been romhacks that fixes that issue for many years now Look up puresabe's slide fix hack and keep in mind you need a rockman 6 rom for it

  • @Zenocide

I don't know if it was mentioned in the comments, but not only was the Mega Buster downgraded, your slide was too. Mega Man 3-5 let you jump cancel your slides but this game, you're stuck until you stop pressing buttons. It made movement a little annoying if you were used to jump cancelling.

I was born in 1981. From what I can tell you’re a lot younger than I am. I am 42 years old. The tech world that you speak of is modern day concept where technology is constantly improved year by year and video games are bombarding us in every single direction. When I was a kid, most of the other kids couldn’t afford to have a Nintendo entertainment system, or a Sega master system. I didn’t get a Nintendo entertainment Until I was roughly 10 years old. My grandparents got my youngest uncle a Nintendo Entertainment system for Christmas. The system that he got was the system with gray light gun - without the power pad. My cousins had the Nintendo entertainment system that came with the robot and the game Gyromite. I got Nintendo entertainment system for Christmas. My package came with the power pad, orange light gun, and a triple game cartridge for super Mario Brothers, hunting and world track meet. By that time they had changed the color of the light gun from gray to orange for safety purposes. But even if you had a Nintendo entertainment system, the games were so expensive back then at around $50 per game - which was a lot of money in the 1980s - that we weren’t getting games until our birthday or Christmas. We would read video game magazines like Nintendo and fantasize about these games. The pictures were all we really knew about them because at that time there was no Internet and the only thing you really knew about the game was what you would see on the commercial. I never played megaman games when I was a kid. When mega man two came out it was all of the rave, but I didn’t have it. I didn’t play any mega man games until mega man X for super Nintendo came out. It was easy for them to release these games at the pace that they released them because even once the games were released, it was uncommon to be able to simply go to the store and find the game in stock. Back then, you didn’t have very many stores to choose from to buy games. Toys “R” Us, Caldor, Kmart, Service merchandise… they were often sold out. The initial mega man game was overlooked. MegaMan two was met with better fanfare. I had the electronics handheld of MegaMan three but I never had the actual Nintendo game. Now that I’m 40, I purchased the entire MegaMan Legacy collection and played through all of the games in sequence. It was an amazing ride over 30 years worth of gaming.

6 was and still is my favorite NES game followed closely by 4 and 2, game design is solid and the boss roster looks the greatest among 6 games with their weapons are quite useful. Fun fact : Did you know that Mechazaurus, the boss in Wily Castle 1, can be beaten by using Rush Power to punch those platforms back to it to deal 1-2 damage each but it's still fast and you'll be in the position to dodge its fireball easier?

Nintendo didn’t publish Mega Man VI to sell the top loader so much as that they (through Nintendo Power) had organized the North American character submission contest and could have faced negative publicity and/or legal implications had the promised game featuring North American submissions not been released. (Nintendo had already dealt with such issues with the Nintendo Power contests, as the Total Recall NES game’s tie-in contest promised a trip to Hollywood to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger went completely awry, and A Link to the Past’s infamous Chris Houlihan room was the dissatisfactory result of a contest to get your name in a Nintendo game.)
